Spotify has recently reported that Limpopo artists are experiencing a significant rise in popularity on the platform. According to the data shared, musicians from the region, including Pleasure Tsa Manyalo and Maredi Maredi, have seen a marked increase in streams and listeners, particularly around the festive period from December 25 to 31, 2023. Notably, streaming peaks occurred from 4pm to 7pm.

These artists are attracting a predominantly millennial audience, with more than 46% of their listeners falling into this age group. Maredi Maredi’s audience mainly consists of 60% male listeners, while Pleasure Tsa Manyalo attracts a slightly more female audience, with a 56% female to 44% male ratio.

Jodie Tabisher, Spotify’s artist, label, and partnerships manager for South Africa, highlighted the diversity of South African music on Spotify. “Beyond individual songs, our platform curates playlists like Limpopo Way, where artists like Pleasure Tsa Manyalo and Maredi Maredi really stand out,” she said.

The data also revealed that regional languages such as Khelobedu, Sepedi, xiTsonga, and tshiVenda are gaining traction through the Limpopo Way playlist. Furthermore, Limpopo artists are extending their reach beyond the region, captivating audiences in major cities including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, and Cape Town.
